Introduction
The City of Vancouver and Vancouver School Board have been running a School Street at Lord Roberts Elementary since 2021 where a car-free block was created on Comox Street between Bidwell Street and Cardero Street during school pick-up and drop-off times.
During the first two years of the School Streets Program, the school community reported an increased sense of safety. Families also reported walking, biking and rolling more often to get to and from school. Building off the success of the pilot and the feedback collected over the last two years, we are looking at creating a thriving public space for the school and wider community to enjoy by implementing a Year-Round School Street.
A Year-Round School Street is a car-free public space at all times of the day throughout the year. The public space would remain accessible to those walking, biking and rolling, but vehicle access and parking would not be available (except for emergency services).
