Historical Discrimination against People of South Asian Canadian Descent
Are you a person of South Asian Canadian descent with ties to Vancouver (e.g., lives, works, visits, or has family in Vancouver, etc.)? We understand that not everyone identifies with the term ‘South Asian Canadian’. Read more in our FAQs.

We are reaching out to learn more about:

  • Your experiences and the impacts of current and historical discrimination in Vancouver; and
  • Potential opportunities for the City to undertake cultural redress for South Asian Canadian communities. Cultural Redress recognizes and addresses the harms of systemic exclusion and discrimination or historic wrong experienced by cultural communities from the actions, policies or programs of the City of Vancouver.

Your answers will help us plan, implement and evaluate our work and address impact on historical and ongoing discrimination against South Asian Canadian communities in our city. For more information on what is within the City’s scope, please review the FAQs.

Updates about this work will be shared on the City's website as initiatives take shape. If you have any questions, please email us at act@vancouver.ca.

You are welcome to skip any questions. The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, you are welcome to enter your email for a chance to win a $100 gift card.

This information will not be used to identify individuals as your privacy is important to us. Individual identifiers are never included in summary reports and personal information such as postal codes, names and email addresses will not be shared. The City of Vancouver’s privacy policy explains our commitment to protecting your privacy.

Please consider your well-being when reflecting on discrimination and racism. Support resources are available on the Government of BC website and at the City’s Anti-racism & Cultural Redress website.

1. This survey is intended for people of South Asian Canadian descent. Are you South Asian, South Asian Canadian, or a Canadian of South Asian heritage? *This question is required.
We recognize that “South Asian” can be a unifying term and it can be a divisive term; not everyone who may have origins to this geographic region identifies with this term.  We will work to highlight the diversity of experiences within and across individual communities as received through this engagement.

Statistics Canada describes South Asian Canadians as a sub-group of Asian Canadians consisting of a range of ethnic, religious and linguistic groups whose ancestries, immigration histories and personal experiences include those with Bangladeshi, Bengali, East Indian, Goan, Gujarati, Hindu, Ismaili, Kashmiri, Nepali, Pakistani, Punjabi, Sikh, Sinhalese, South Asian, Sri Lankan and Tamil ancestry. South Asians may have been born in Canada or other parts of the world, but their heritage is associated with the Indian sub-continent. Read more in our FAQs.
